Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Making his third start of the season, veteran big-leaguer Claudio Vargas was roughed up, allowing seven runs in 2.2 innings as the Albuquerque Isotopes (37-38) were thumped by the Memphis Redbirds (42-35) 15-3 Sunday night at Isotopes Park. The loss is the second straight to the ‘Birds this series and fourth straight this season.

Memphis exploded for crooked numbers in each of the first four innings, building a10-2 lead through just four frames.

The Redbirds Jon Jay was the biggest Isotope killer of the night. In five at-bats, Jay had three hits for 4 RBIs, which included a solo-home run on the second pitch of the game to put Memphis up 1-0 immediately.

Vargas (0-2) threw 29 pitches to the first eight batters in the first inning alone. He finished the game with 2.2 innings-pitched that consisted of seven earned runs on seven hits, four of which went for extra bases.

One of the only bright spots for Albuquerque came in the bottom half of the second. The ‘Topes opened up the inning with four straight singles from Jay Gibbons, Jamie Hoffmann, Lucas May and Michael Restovich, the last of which would plate Gibbons to give the ‘Topes their first run. Justin Sellers would single into a fielders' choice that would leave him safe at first base because of a bobbled ball by Memphis second baseman Daniel Descalso while May scored from third to cut the Memphis lead at the time to 5-2.

That's all Albuquerque would muster on Redbird starting pitcher Evan MacLane, who held the Isotopes in check for 7.0 innings and only allowed eight hits for two earned runs.

After the Redbirds scored four more runs in the sixth, Allen Craig helped punctuate the Memphis win in the top of the ninth with his second home run of the game, to go along with five RBI, putting the ‘Birds ahead 15-2.

Hoffmann would add one last bright moment for Albuquerque in the bottom of the ninth, roping a double, the only extra-base hit by the Isotopes on the contest, and scoring on an RBI single by May to finish of the game's scoring in the 15-3 set-back.

The Isotopes will look to get back in the win column after three straight losses behind right-hander Carlos Monasterios (0-0, No ERA), who will be making the Major League rehabilitation start against Memphis righty Lance Lynn (5-5, 5.25) in a 7:05 PM start from Isotopes Park.

Albuquerque continues its series with the Redbirds with a Monday night game before wrapping up the four-game set with a business-person's special on Tuesday. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
