Sox Stumble Against Portland, Fall 7-2

June 28, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Sky Sox couldn't find their groove Monday night at Security Service Field, falling to the Portland Beavers by a score of 7-2. Trailing from the early going, the Sox were unable to mount any semblance of an attack, totaling just four hits on the day.

The Sox pitching staff had just as much difficulty solving the Beavers as starter Chaz Roe had a rough start, allowing four earned runs over 7.0 innings. Concluding his recent stretch of stellar play, the hurler ended a four start stretch that included a 2.59 ERA and 3-0 record over 31.1 innings pitched.

Exchanging scoreless frames over the first two innings, the Beavers broke the 0-0 tie with a two run third. Starting off with a Cedric Hunter ground rule double to right, Sean Kazmar advanced the runner to third with a bunt single. Mike Baxter drove Hunter with a sacrifice fly to center on the next at-bat, while a Chaz Roe throwing error on an attempted pickoff allowed Kazmar to scamper to third. Craig Cooper subsequently hit another RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Kazmar for the innings second and final run; 2-0.

Roe was shaky once again in the top of the fourth. Portland capitalizing with three additional scores on the strength of two singles, two walks, and a wild pitch, the visitors ended the frame with a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Springs fought back in the bottom half, scoring two of their own to draw within three, but Portland quickly extended their lead back to five with a two-run sixth; 7-2. Beavers' relievers Adam Russell and Ernesto Frieri combined to throw a scoreless eighth and ninth, securing the Beavers' victory.

With the loss, the Sky Sox fall to 35-43 while the Beavers improve to 31-47. The Sox have now lost six of their last eight games.

The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow night before the Sky Sox begin a three-game set with Salt Lake. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
