Big Third Period Lifts Winterhawks to 5-2 Win over Vancouver

The Portland Winterhawks (34-20-1-3) scored three times in the third period for a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Giants (25-31-1-2) Friday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Hawks notched the lone goal of the first 11:49 into the game when Dominic Turgeon put the puck past Vancouver netminder Payton Lee for a 1-0 lead Portland took into the second.

Vancouver evened the game 8:49 into the second on a goal by Jackson Houck to make it 1-1, but the Hawks regained the lead at 15:42 when Paul Bittner fed Oliver Bjorkstrand, who wired the puck from the right faceoff circle past Lee for a 2-1 advantage. The Giants got that one back with 43.9 seconds to go in the frame on a goal by Dalton Sward to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the third.

The Hawks broke the tie early in the final frame with a pair of goals just 57 seconds apart, first from Keegan Iverson at 3:52 followed less than a minute later by Skyler McKenzie as they took a 4-2 lead. Portland struck again at 14:18 when Layne Viveiros fired a blast past Lee for a 5-2 lead that would stand as the final.

Turgeon and McKenzie each had two points in the win for Portland.

Adin Hill earned the victory in net with 31 saves on 33 shots. Lee allowed five goals on 46 Portland shots.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7 p.m. at the Coliseum.
