Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - Jon Martin's goal in the first half of the first period was all Kootenay needed on Saturday night, shutting out the hosting Spokane Chiefs, 5-0. The loss was Spokane's third straight, but they remained in the first wild card position in the Western Conference with a one point lead on Tri-City.
Martin scored on a rebound created by Montreal Canadiens prospect Tim Bozon midway through the first period, punching his seventh goal of the season past Chiefs' rookie goaltender Tyson Verhelst. Kootenay captain and second-overall 2014 NHL Draft selection Sam Reinhart earned his 33rd assist on the play.
Luke Philp added to the Kootenay lead at the 8:09 mark of the second period, sliding a shot on net that fooled a screened Verhelst, beating him between his legs. Overage forward Austin Vetterl earned his 26th point of the season with an assist.
The Ice pulled even further away with Jaedon Descheneau's 26th goal of the season just over eight minutes later, taking advantage of a pass from Vetterl on a 2-on-1. The goal was the St. Louis Blues prospect's team-best 69th point of the season.
Kootenay tacked on two more late in the third period, with Philp scoring his 26th and Descheneau piling on his 27th. Reinhart earned his 34th assist of the season on Philp's tally, which came on the power play.
Verhelst finished with 19 saves on 24 shots faced while Kootenay netminder Wyatt Hoflin earned his third shutout of the season with 29 saves.
The Chiefs return to Spokane Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 25 for a weekday matchup against the division-leading Everett Silvertips. It will be the seventh of nine TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaway Nights this season. Tickets are available in-person at the Chiefs' Ticket Office, over the phone at (509) 535-PUCK or (800) 325-SEAT, and online at www.ticketswest.com.
