Winterhawks Down Hurricanes 5-2 Saturday

The Portland Winterhawks (35-20-1-3) earned a 5-2 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes (18-34-4-3) Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

It didn't take long for the Hawks to open the scoring, as just 59 seconds into the game Keegan Iverson banged in a rebound for the early 1-0 lead. Portland then extended it at the 12:49 mark when Paul Bittner tipped in a shot from Oliver Bjorkstrand to make it 2-0.

Lethbridge got back within one on when Giorgio Estephan scored on a power play at the 15:38 mark to get within 2-1, a lead Portland took into the second period.

The Hawks then played an outstanding second period, outshooting the Hurricanes 14-3, and went back up by two early in the frame when Oliver Bjorkstrand scored his 42nd goal of the season for a 3-1 lead. Portland struck again at 12:29 when Bittner scored on a shot from the left faceoff circle, his second goal of the game, and a 4-1 advantage the Hawks took into the third.

It remained 4-1 until 2:44 remained, when Bjorkstrand notched his second of the game on a power play for a 5-1 lead. Lethbridge's Carter Amson scored on the ensuing shift to cut it to 5-2, which stood as the final.

Nic Petan had four assists in the while, while linemates Bittner and Bjorkstrand had three points each.

Adin Hill earned the win in net with 21 saves on 23 shots. Sittler allowed five goals on 36 Portland shots.

The Hawks will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Kennewick, WA to take on the Tri-City Americans.
