Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, Texas - The Texas Stars rattled off three goals in the second period, including two shorthanded, to erase a two-goal deficit and overtake the Bakersfield Condors in a 5-4 win on Friday night at Cedar Park Center in front of 5,165 in attendance.
Travis Morin led all skaters with a goal and two assists in the game for Texas (6-2-0-1). Derek Hulak at 2:34 and Stephen Johns just over a minute later scored back-to-back shorthanded goals to knot the score at 3-3 in the second. Branden Troock then pushed Texas ahead for good late in the middle frame.
The Stars and Condors (2-4-0-1) square off again on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Cedar Park Center.
The Condors opened the scoring just over six minutes into the contest on the first of two power play goals by Brad Hunt. Matej Stransky capped off a Jason Dickinson assist at 15:40 to tie things up, but Bakersfield's Ryan Hamilton responded a minute later to make it 2-1 through the first.
Hunt tallied his second of the game early in the second period to make it 3-1 and set up the explosive sequence for the Stars penalty kill unit. Hulak's shorthanded strike came off a slap shot just across the middle of the Condors' blue line and Devin Shore poked a puck towards the slot to set up Johns for his first in a Stars sweater. Troock's second goal of the season came from the right circle on an odd-man rush.
Beginning the third period on the power play, Morin extended the Texas lead to 5-3 with a power play goal at 1:44 by carrying the puck across the slot to draw Bakersfield netminder Laurent Brossoit out of position before sliding home his third of the year. Joshua Winquist banked a shot off the crossbar at 7:26 of the period to close the gap to 5-4, but the Stars held on in the end.
Texas finished 1-for-3 on the power play while the Condors went 2-for-4. Maxime Lagace earned his third win of the season, stopping 30 shots. Brossoit was 31 of 36 in the loss.
Shore's second period assist gives him 11 points on the season now, which ranks second among league rookies.
The Texas Stars are the primary development affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars and currently in their seventh season at Cedar Park Center. Full season, 24-game and 12-game ticket packages for the 2015-16 campaign are on sale now. For more information, call (512) GO-STARS (467-8277) or visit TexasStars.com.
