ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2015) - Bracken Kearns scored the game-winner four minutes into the third period as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers defeated the Albany Devils 3-2 on Friday night at Times Union Center.
Kearns' team-leading sixth of the season came on a 4-on-3 break for the Sound Tigers. Kirill Petrov found Kearns with the pass, who beat Devils netminder Doug Carr up high for the eventual winner. Former Albany Devil Joe Whitney notched the secondary assist on the play.
Bridgeport hopped out to the early lead just 85 seconds into the game. With the puck bouncing around near the crease, it popped onto the stick of Alan Quine, who buried it for his second goal of the season. Mike Halmo and Taylor Beck assisted on what was the first shot of the game for either team.
The Devils responded quickly with a goal of their own on their first shot of the game. Vojtech Mozik took what looked like an innocent shot from the point, but Sound Tigers netminder Stephon Williams never saw it, as the puck hit the post and went in, tying the game at 1-1. Mozik's goal was his first in the AHL, as the 22-year-old Czech came over to North America in the offseason.
The teams traded power plays in the first period, but Albany was the only team to cash in. On their second power play of the game, Mike Sislo fired a slap shot with the puck on edge. The puck knuckled on its way to the net, beating Williams under the glove to make it 2-1 Devils. It was Albany's fifth power play goal in three periods, as they scored four power play goals last game against Binghamton.
The second period saw just three shots from Bridgeport to Albany's seven, but it was the Sound Tigers getting the lone goal. Justin Vaive took a pass from Ben Holmstrom and wristed a shot five hole that beat Carr. Scott Mayfield earned the secondary assist on Vaive's second goal in as many games.
Kearns' goal was the only marker of a relatively uneventful third period. Albany outshot Bridgeport 7-6 in the final frame, but neither team had a shot in the final several minutes. The Sound Tigers outshot the Devils 20-17 for the game.
Williams had to make just 15 saves for his fourth win of the season. Bridgeport's power play failed to tally once again, going 0-for-4 while going 3-for-4 on the kill.
The Sound Tigers return home to commence a five-game homestand on Sunday when they'll host the Utica Comets. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
