Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City Dodgers put together a dominant second inning - and Rob Segedin fell a double short of the cycle - in a 9-2 win against the New Orleans Zephyrs Thursday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The Dodgers (14-11) scored eight runs on nine hits in the second inning. Five of the hits went for extra bases, including three triples, in front of a crowd of 5,644.
Segedin finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and single with three RBI and two runs scored. His home run and triple both came in the second inning. He added a single in the fourth inning.
The win gave Oklahoma City a split in its four-game home series against the Zephyrs (13-13).
The Dodgers opened the bottom of the second inning with four straight hits.
Segedin hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season to left center field to lead off the frame for Oklahoma City. Zach Walters and Alex Hassan followed with singles before James Ramsey connected on his third triple of the season to bring home two Oklahoma City runs. A sacrifice fly by Elian Herrera then boosted the Dodgers to a 4-0 advantage.
Later in the inning with two outs, a RBI single by Austin Barnes extended Oklahoma City's lead to five runs. Back-to-back RBI triples from Corey Brown and Segedin, on either side of a New Orleans pitching change, pushed the Dodgers to a 7-0 lead.
Zach Walters' RBI double then gave the Dodgers an 8-0 lead, and their highest run total in a single inning since also scoring eight runs in the sixth inning of their May 28, 2015 game at Salt Lake.
The Dodgers tied their season high game total for extra-base hits with five in the second inning.
Segedin's RBI single in the fourth inning gave him a 3-for-3 start to the game and extended the Dodgers' lead to 9-0. Segedin later flied out to right field in the seventh inning during his last at-bat of the night.
The Zephyrs broke through the shutout in the sixth inning when Robert Andino hit a solo homer onto the Budweiser Deck in left field for the Zephyrs' first run of the game.
The home run ended a stretch of 16 straight scoreless innings from the Oklahoma City pitching staff.
The Zephyrs added a run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Matt Juengel to cut the Dodgers' lead to 9-2.
Walters also went 3-for-4 in the game, while Brown and Ramsey each finished the night with two hits for Oklahoma City. Ramsey also added two RBI in the game.
Oklahoma City starting pitcher Zach Lee (4-1) allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits in his team-leading fourth win of the season. He did not issue a walk and recorded seven strikeouts. He struck out five of the first six batters he faced.
New Orleans starting pitcher Dylan Axelrod (0-1) allowed seven runs on eight hits in the loss.
The Dodgers finished the game with a season-high three errors - all of which came in the seventh inning.
The Dodgers open an eight-game road trip at 7:35 p.m. Central time Friday against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Security Service Field. Oklahoma City will play four games in Colorado Springs before traveling to Texas for a four-game series at Round Rock.
