Grizzlies drop another close one, split series with Aces

May 5, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

The Fresno Grizzlies dropped a game by the slimmest of margins on Thursday afternoon, as the defending Triple-A National Champs continue to struggle in day games. The Reno Aces (12-15) left town with a four-game split following a 3-2 victory to wrap an eight-game Grizz homestand.

Fresno (12-14) went 4-4 on the homestand, matching their record in the first homestand of the season. They dropped to 3-6 in one-run games with a 3-4 mark at home, all four of those one-run losses dealt by the Aces and El Paso in this most recent homestand.

Reno set the pace in the fourth, breaking a scoreless tie on a Zach Borenstein RBI groundout to second, scoring Socrates Brito who led off with a single. It was 3-0 Aces an inning later, thanks to Brito's 2-run triple, Reno's third consecutive two-out hit that frame which scored Tuffy Gosewisch and Mike Freeman after they rapped back-to-back singles.

That was all the Reno scoring for the day, as two late-inning Grizz rallies fell short. After loading the bases with none out in the seventh on an A.J. Reed single and two walks, Fresno managed just one run on a Eury Perez RBI fielder's choice. The top Houston prospect Reed has now hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games.

In the ninth, Matt Duffy's one-out double turned into a run on a Jon Singleton pinch-hit sac-fly, but Nolan Fontana was ultimately stranded as the potential tying run after his single, ending the game.

Aces starter Tyler Wagner, who already has one Major League winning decision under his belt this year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, improved to 1-3 despite his 2.91 ERA with a six-inning effort, allowing just four hits and a run; he walked four with two strikeouts. Grizzlies' starter Mike Hauschild fell to 2-3, going five and two-thirds with seven hits, three runs (all earned) and six strikeouts. Hauschild did not walk a batter.

Despite allowing two hits and the sac fly in the ninth, Silvino Bracho hung on for his fourth save in the ninth, as he saved both Reno wins in the series.

Fresno fell to 1-5 in day games this season, and are 11-20 in day games since opening day 2015, while posting an 85-53 record in night games during that span. They'll play at least one day game in their next six series (seven games overall); the next series sans a day game is May 31 to June 3 at Albuquerque.

The Grizzlies will now journey to West Texas for the first of four over the weekend and Monday against the El Paso Chihuahuas. Friday's scheduled starters are LHP Tommy Shirley (3-1, 3.13) for Fresno and RHP Jeremy Guthrie (0-5, 9.36) for El Paso.
