Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - In their series finale against the Round Rock Express, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox offense erupted for three late runs to defeat the Express 6-4 on Thursday afternoon in front of an energetic crowd of 5,458 at Security Service Field.

Down a run going to the bottom of the eighth, the Sky Sox offense went to work. Manny Pina led off the inning with a walk. The next batter, Will Middlebrooks lined a double down the left field line, and Pina was able to score the tying run on an error from the left fielder throwing the ball back in. Josmil Pinto gave the Sky Sox the lead on a line drive double down the right field line as Middlebrooks scored. Nate Orf followed with a single up the middle to score Pinto and give the Sky Sox a two-run lead heading to the ninth.

Damien Magnifico came on in the ninth and worked around a pair of hits to pitch a scoreless inning to earn his sixth save of the season.

The game started as a pitchers duel between Hiram Burgos (1-2, 6.20) of the Sky Sox and Michael Roth (2-0, 1.42) of the Express. Neither pitcher gave up a run in the first three innings.

The Sky Sox were able to break through in the fourth with a two-out run. Pinto drew a walk with one out. A couple batters later, Orf doubled down the left field line to score Pinto with the game's first run. The run batted in for Orf is his first with the Sky Sox.

Round Rock responded with three runs in the fifth. After a triple and a strikeout started the inning, the Sky Sox turned to Drew Gagnon out of the bullpen to replace Burgos. After a fielder's choice ground ball tied the game, Michael McKenry gave the Express the lead with a two-run single to left.

Burgos pitched four and a third innings for the Sky Sox, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out four. For Round Rock, Roth pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts.

In the sixth, the Sky Sox got closer as Middlebrooks blasted a long home run, his second of the season, over the left field fence to put the Sky Sox within a run.

Colorado Springs tied it in the seventh on a Keon Broxton triple off the left field wall that scored Orf with the tying run.

In the eighth, the Express scratched out a run to take the lead off Jaye Chapman, who was making his first appearance of the year for the Sky Sox. But Chapman would emerge as the winning pitcher thanks to the Sky Sox offense.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Sky Sox rallied off the Round Rock bullpen to score three times to earn the win in the series finale.

Orf finished the game with three hits, two runs batted in, and two steals. Broxton and Middlebrooks each had multi-hit games as well.

The Sky Sox open a four game set against the Oklahoma City Dodgers tomorrow night at Security Service Field. Tyler Cravy (0-0, 3.18) will get the start for the Sky Sox against Jeremy Kehrt (2-1, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
