Big Fifth Sends Richmond to an 8-2 Win over Erie

The SeaWolves could not overcome a crooked number in the fifth inning as they fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels by an 8-2 final on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
Richmond took the lead in the third against Erie starter Elvin Rodriguez. Shane Matheny walked with one out and Simon Whiteman followed with a two-run home run, his third of the season.
Erie tied the game in the top of the fourth against Squirrels starter Michael Plassmeyer. Andre Lipcius doubled with one out and Dane Myers blasted a two-run home run to straight away center. The home run for Myers was his second.
The Squirrels regained the lead in the home half of the fourth when Heath Quinn homered to left-center making it 3-2.
Richmond then opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth. Matheny led off with a solo home run to left for a 4-2 lead. The three home runs were a season-high allowed by Rodriguez. Whiteman followed with a double and David Villar walked with one out. Sandro Fabian doubled home both baserunners for a 6-2 lead. Erie summoned Chavez Fernander who gave up a two-out walk and a two-run triple to Vince Fernandez for an 8-2 Squirrels advantage.
Plassmeyer (2-6) earned the win for Richmond. He allowed two runs on five hits with two walks while tying a career-high with nine strikeouts in equaling a season-high seven innings of work.
Rodriguez (4-5) took the loss allowing a season-high seven runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 4.1 innings.
Fernander and Ruben Garcia combined to allow one run over the final 3.2 innings of the game. The Erie bullpen has yielded just one run over nine innings in the first two games of the series.
