Big Divisional Showdowns Loom This Weekend
February 14, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (Feb. 14, 2003) - The Utah Grizzlies (26-20-3-2) begin what may be the most crucial weekend of the season tonight at the E-Center when they square off against the Chicago Wolves (25-19-6-3). Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM. After tonight's contest, the Grizzlies will hit the road traveling to Houston where they will meet the West Division leading Houston Aeros (35-13-6-1) both Saturday (6:30 PM mst) and Sunday (4:00 PM mst).
Currently the Grizzlies are in fourth place in the West Division and in the seventh position in the Western Conference. However, the differential between the fourth seed and the 10th seed is just seven points. Utah trails the fourth seeded Hershey Bears by three points.
The Wolves are two points in front of the Grizzlies after Wednesday's 3-2 overtime victory. A win tonight by Utah would pull them even with Chicago in second place in the division.
The rest of the weekend features a pair of showdowns with the Aeros. The two teams have not met since December 14th when Utah defeated Houston (5-2) for just the second time in five meetings. The Aeros have been on fire since they swept two games from the Grizzlies at the Compaq Center back on opening weekend.
Thus far, the Grizzlies are just 10-10-0-2 within the division which ranks them fourth of the five teams. On the road, Utah is 2-5 within the West Division. In head-to-head meetings with Chicago, Utah is 4-1-0-2 and versus Houston the Grizzlies are 2-3.
Divisional Records:
Milwaukee 15-9-2-2 34 points
Chicago 14-9-1-3 32 points
Houston 13-6-3-1 30 points
Utah 10-10-0-2 22 points
San Antonio 6-16-2-0 14 points
Tonight will also be "My Big, Fat, Utah Wedding" at the E-Center. The Grizzlies along with KBULL 93 FM will be presenting 93 couples getting married on the ice during the first intermission (apx. 7:40 PM). The honorable Judge Michael Kwan of Taylorsville, Utah will perform the nuptials.
