Falcons Wheel and Deal

February 14, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Falcons have traded defenseman Kevin Haupt and forward Mike Barrie to the Long Beach Ice Dogs in exchange for right winger Chris Kenady (pr: Kennedy) and centerman Jeff Attard (pr: uh-TARD).

Kenady becomes the ninth player in Falcons history to have played at the National Hockey League level. He spent five games with the St. Louis Blues in 1997-98 and two games with the New York Rangers during the 1999-00 season. The former 8th round draft pick of the Blues spent his entire eight-year professional career in the American and International Hockey Leagues before joining the Ice Dogs last season where he recorded 69 points (35g-34a) and 161 penalty minutes on his way to being named Second Team All-WCHL. In 27 games played this season with Long Beach he registered 29 points (16g-13a) and 66 minutes in penalties.

Attard is a second-year pro who was named to the league's All-Rookie Team last year by tallying 31 points (11g-20a) for the Ice Dogs. He played 34 games for Long Beach this season and recorded 19 points (5g-14a) and 74 penalty minutes.

"You always have to give up something and take a risk to make a move like this, and Kevin and Mike are going to be missed," said Falcons head coach/general manager Blaine Moore. "But with our depth at defense we felt we could improve our balance up front with the addition of Chris and Jeff and get ourselves in a better position to try to defend the Cup.

Haupt departs the team with the highest +/- rating (+14) of any Falcons defenseman and as the second leading scorer among blue-liners behind Cory Murphy with 24 points (5g-19a). Barrie totaled 28 points (10g-18a) in 26 games with Fresno and had both a four-goal and a five-point game with the club in his limited time wearing a Falcons sweater.

The Falcons are in the midst of a week-long layoff and do not return to game action until this Sunday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. against the Bakersfield Condors. They then welcome the San Diego Gulls to town on Monday for a Presidents' Day matinee at 1 p.m. Tickets are still available for both contests at the Selland Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
