Manchester Monarchs News Release
PORTLAND, ME - Jean-Francois Berube pitched his first shutout of the season, making 19 saves in the Monarchs' 4-0 win at Portland on Tuesday night.
The victory moved Manchester (7-4-0-0) into a tie with the Pirates (7-6-0-0) for third place in the Atlantic Division.
It was Berube's first shutout since he also blanked Portland on April 12 of last season, recording 23 saves in that game at Manchester.
The Monarchs went on the penalty kill seven times in the game, but killed it off on each occasion.
Sean Backman made it 1-0 at 5:55 in the first period when he beat Louis Domingue on a wrist shot from the right wing. It was his third goal of the season.
Michael Mersch tangled with Jordan Szwarz two minutes into the second period in his first fight of the season, but ended in a draw. That bout was followed just a minute-and-a-half later by a fight featuring Josh Gratton and Eric Selleck that ended with Gratton getting knocked off his feet.
Justin Auger tallied his second goal of the season at 3:11 in the second period when he banged home a loose puck in front of the Portland goal.
Colin Miller extended the lead to 3-0 when he scored at 1:14 in the third period, his fourth goal of the season. He leads all Monarchs defensemen in goals and points (6) this season.
Jordan Weal lit the lamp just a minute and 10 seconds later on the power play to finish off the scoring.
The Monarchs are on the road again on Friday night when they travel to Worcester for a 7:30 p.m. game. They return home Saturday for a 7 p.m. tilt against Providence at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Mullets in Movember Night.
Notes:
* Manchester has scored first in nine of its 11 games this year, going 7-2-0-0 in those contests. * The Monarchs are outscoring opponents 12-4 in the first period. * Colin Miller's goal in the third period was his first even-strength goal of the season after his first three goals all came on the power play. * Nick Shore had two assists tonight, his second straight multi-point game and third in his last four contests.
