Pirates Blanked by Monarchs in 1st Home Loss

Portland, ME- The Portland Pirates (7-6-0-0) were shutout by the Manchester Monarchs (7-4-0-0) by a score of 4-0 on Tuesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. It was the second game of the season series VIP Cup presented by VIP Tires and Service, Manchester now leads by a tally of two games to none.

The Pirates suffered a game full of turnovers and missed opportunities. They were held to only 19 shots in the entire contest.

Manchester lit the lamp in the first period at 5:55 with a goal from Sean Backman, assisted by David Van der Gulik and Nic Dowd. That goal set the pace for the game, with the Pirates unable to make up the deficit.

The second period brought another early Manchester goal, this time scored by Justin Auger at 3:11 with Nick Ebert and Nick Shore getting the assists.

The Monarchs put the nail in the coffin with two more goals in the final frame of action. Just over a minute into the period, Colin Miller scored, with assists from Brian O'Neill and Shore. The fourth Manchester goal came at 2:24 with the Monarchs on a Power Play, scored by Jordan Weal and assisted by Van der Gulik.

Pirates goalie Louis Domingue (4-2-0) manned the net, and stopped 21 of 25 shots. Jean-Francois Brube (5-3-0) got the shutout for his fifth win of the season, stopping all 19 Pirates shots.

The Pirates will host the Albany Devils for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. Both games take place at 7 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena. They then hit the road Sunday for a game in Providence at the Dunkin Donuts Center at 3:05. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
