Bergesen's Brilliance Boosts Bowie

(Manchester, NH) - Brad Bergesen made the most of his first opportunity with the Baysox, shutting down New Hampshire to propel the Baysox to their first winning record of the season. Bergesen threw seven shutout innings, allowing three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Kam Mickolio allowed one run in the bottom of the ninth in the 8-1 Baysox victory.

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in their fourth consecutive victory. They are now 11-10, and tied with Erie for second place in the Southern Division.

Jonathan Tucker singled to lead off the game, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Brian Jeroloman. Carlos Rojas singled to left, scoring Tucker, and went to second on a Lou Montanez groundout. Ryan Finan drew a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Now with runners on second and third with one out, Ben Davis hit a double to left field, scoring both Rojas and Finan. The Baysox led 3-0 after half an inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Baysox offense would explode for their biggest inning of the season. Lou Montanez led the inning off with a walk and went to second on a Jeff Nettles single. Ben Davis hit his second double of the game to left field to score Montanez, and Nettles moved to third. Nolan Reimold was intentionally walked to load the bases. The Fisher Cats drew the infield in and Sebastien Boucher hit a groundball to shortstop Chris Gutierrez. Gutirrez threw home for a force out, retiring Nettles. With one out and the bases still loaded, the Fisher Cats moved the infield out again and Travis Brown hit another groundball to Chris Gutierrez. Gutirrez threw to second to retire Boucher, but the Fisher Cats couldn't turn the double play and Ben Davis scored. Now with two outs and runners on the corners, Blake Davis hit a triple to right field, scoring Reimold and Brown. Blake Davis scored an unearned run when Gutierrez couldn't field a ball hit by Jonathan Tucker.

Kam Mickolio pitched 2.0 innings in relief of Bergesen and retired the first five batters he faced, four of them on strikeouts. Mickolio allowed three straight hits with two outs in the ninth, including an RBI double by Jacob Butler. Mickolio recorded his fifth strikeout to end the game with runners on the corners.

Jonathan Tucker, Carlos Rojas, Lou Montanez and Ben Davis each had a pair of hits for the Baysox, Ben Davis had 3 RBI and Blake Davis had 2 RBI in the game.

The Baysox and the Fisher Cats will meet again at 1:05 p.m. Saturday in the third of a four game series. David Hernandez (1-0, 2.70 ERA) will start for the Baysox, going up against RHP Scott Richmond (2-2, 4.57 ERA).
