McCutchen strikes out 12 in Trenton's 8-3 win over New Britain

(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder RHP Dan McCutchen struck out a career-high 12 batters and gave up only one hit as Trenton defeated New Britain on Friday night 8-3 at Waterfront Park. The win was Trenton's fourth straight, a season-high, and they have now won five of six games this season against New Britain.
Trenton (14-9) jumped on New Britain starting pitcher Ryan Mullins (1-2) early in the 1st inning. With runners at 1st and 2nd and one out, DH Matt Carson connected on an RBI single to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Carson extended his hitting streak to 12 games, which ties Thunder CF Austin Jackson with the longest streak for a Thunder player this season. Later in the inning, C P.J. Pilittere plated two more runs with a two-run single to increase the lead to 3-0. Mullins went 4 IP and gave up 6 H and 5 R (3 earned) to take the loss for New Britain (9-11).
McCutchen (3-1) would give up a run in the 2nd inning, on a two-out RBI single by New Britain 2B Steve Tolleson, but the Rock Cats would not have another base runner reach the rest of the night. McCutchen retired the final 16 batters he faced. Tolleson's hit was the only hit that he allowed in the game.
Trenton added single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, on a sacrifice fly RBI by RF Jose Tabata, and on an error by Tolleson to make it 5-1. The Thunder would put the game out of reach in the 5th inning with an RBI double by 1B Chris Malec and RBI groundout by SS Ramiro Pena to stretch the lead to 7-1. Up 7-3 in the 8th inning, Thunder 3B Carlos Mendoza picked up an RBI single for his first run-batted-in of the season.
Game three of the series is tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. LHP Phil Coke (0-1, 6.75) will start for Trenton against New Britain RHP Anthony Swarzak (2-0, 1.35).
