Connecticut Defenders News Release

READING, PA- After clinging to a one-run advantage for most of the game thanks to a stunning performance by starter Adam Cowart, the Defenders dropped their first game in Reading, 3-2.

Connecticut would score all of their runs in the top of the first inning as Travis Ishikawa doubled home Ben Copeland who singled earlier and Travis Denker brought Ishikawa home on a double of his own. Before the Phils got a chance to hit, the Defenders claimed stake to a 2-0 advantage.

Reading would get one back in the home half of the first on an RBI single sprayed off the bat of Lou Marson to bring home Josh Donald from second and make it 2-1 Connecticut.

After a shaky first, both Cowart and Phillies hurler Drew Carpenter settled down and exchanged zeroes for the next five full innings of play.

Cowart's final line was spectacular as he allowed just the one run in the first, scattered six hits, struck out five and walked none as he left the game in line for the win.

The normally steady Kelvin Pichardo took the ball in the seventh and was touched up instantaneously as he surrendered a two-run homer to Jeremy Slayden to give the R-Phils their first lead of the night, 3-2.

The Defenders would be retired in order in the eighth and ninth as they fell to 10-11 on the season.

Connecticut will square off against the Phillies on Saturday in Reading at 6:35pm. Catch all the action live at ctdefenders.com or locally on 1310 WICH AM. The Defenders will return to Dodd Stadium on Tuesday night as they open a three-game set against the Yankee-affiliated Trenton Thunder. Tickets are available by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
