Belzile Gets 100th AHL Point in 5-2 Loss to Senators
February 8, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Laval Rocket News Release
LAVAL - Alex Belzile earned his 100th and 101st career American Hockey League points in the Laval Rocket's 5-2 loss to the Belleville Senators at Place Bell on Friday night, where his assist on Xavier Ouellet's third goal of the season gave him the milestone and his own goal late in the third added to the achievement. The game was the first of a back-to-back between the two teams, as they will play one another again tomorrow night at Belleville's CAA Arena.
The physical game against the divisional rival saw three goals scored in the opening period, of which two were in favour of the Senators. Drake Batherson's spin-o-rama less than four minutes into the period ended with the puck squeezing under Charlie Lindgren's pads to make it 1-0, but a quick powerplay goal from Ouellet put Joël Bouchard's troops on the board as well. Belleville got a powerplay goal of their own halfway through the period however, and they held on to their lead until the end of the period.
The Senators gave themselves a two-goal lead in the second period thanks to Filip Chlapik's second of the night but despite the score, the Rocket were in the game. Brett Lernout hit the post early in the period and two loose pucks trickled through the legs of Belleville's Marcus Hogberg in the final minutes of the period, bringing the Rocket a little puck luck away from being tied heading into the third as opposed to having a two-goal deficit.
Unfortunately for the Rocket Belleville added to their lead early in the third with a tic-tac-toe passing play that resulted in Nick Paul's fourth of the season going by Lindgren, and a fifth goal for the Senators put the game out of reach for the Rocket. The Rocket would add to their side of the scoreboard by period's end however, as Belzile deflected Ouellet's shot by Hogberg for their second points of the night.
"We came out strong and the guys had enthusiasm," said Bouchard after the game. "We faced a good hockey team on the other side of the ice today who has good execution. They have a good cohesion too, but that being said, we can't permit ourselves to make mistakes. We don't have a margin of error," added Bouchard.
