Beck's Hit the Difference in 3-2 Ports Win

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports made a three-run inning stand tall on Sunday afternoon at Excite Ballpark. The centerpiece of that inning was a clutch two-out, two-run single by Austin Beck that gave the Ports the lead for good and ultimately helped the Boys of Banner Island to a three-game sweep of the San Jose Giants as the Ports earned a 3-2 victory to close a seven-game road trip.

Major League veteran Edwin Jackson (1-0) got the start in the ballgame for the Ports after being signed by the A's as a minor league free agent. Jackson would give up a run in the bottom of the first on back-to-back singles by Bryce Johnson and Jean Angomas, who drove in Johnson from second after a stolen base.

Giants starter Matt Frisbee (0-1), who made his California League debut on Sunday, kept the Ports out of the run column over the first two innings and opened the third with back-to-back strikeouts. With two outs, however, the Ports got a solo home run from Jordan Devencenzi that tied the game at 1-1. After a Nick Allen single and Jameson Hannah double put runners at second and third with two outs, Beck worked a full count in a lengthy sequence and then delivered a two-run single to right field to give the Ports the lead for good at 3-2.

Frisbee would suffer the loss, going four innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five.

The Ports would put the leadoff man aboard in each of the next five innings but would not be able to push another run across the remainder of the contest as Frank Rubio, Camilo Doval and Raffi Vizcaino combined to hold the Ports scoreless the rest of the way.

Jackson, meanwhile, would give up a leadoff home run in the fifth to Ronnie Freeman that cut the Stockton lead to a run at 3-2. Jackson would retire the next three batters to close out his outing and would go on to pick up the victory, going five innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out nine without issuing a walk.

Joel Seddon took over for Jackson in the sixth and set down the first six batters he faced. Seddon gave up a leadoff single to Gio Brusa in the eighth and issued a two-out walk to Johnson but went on to strand both runners in the frame as he worked three scoreless innings in relief.

Jesus Zambrano (SV, 1) came on to pitch the ninth and set the side down in order on three flyouts to close out the ballgame and earn his first save of the season.

After a three-game sweep of the Giants and a 3-4 road trip, the Ports return to Banner Island Ballpark on Monday night to kick off a seven-game homestand, beginning with a four-game series versus the Visalia Rawhide. Xavier Altamirano (1-2, 5.12 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Visalia right-hander Justin Vernia (1-0, 0.82 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
