Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Ben Johnson drove in three runs in his return to Portland and Josh Barfield had three hits as the Beavers defeated the Sacramento River Cats 7-3 Monday night at PGE Park.

Miguel Ojeda hit his first home run since joining the Beavers (47-48) and Greg Sain added two RBIs in the winning cause.

Reliever Jack Cassel (1-1) picked up his first Triple-A victory with two innings of scoreless work for the Beavers, who used five different pitchers.

Sacramento's Seth Etherton (6-4) gave up five runs (3 earned) on six hits over 3.1 innings for the loss. Etherton won five of his last six starts coming into the game.

The Beavers, who had 13 hits, fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first before taking control with seven unanswered runs until the ninth.

Dustin Delucchi drew a leadoff walk against Etherton in the first, scoring on a fielder's choice by Johnson, who was optioned down from San Diego earlier in the day. The Beavers tied it in the second when J.J. Furmaniak doubled and eventually scored on Sain's RBI groundout.

Barfield legged out a leadoff triple and Sain drove him home with a sac fly to start a three-run rally in the fourth. Johnson upped the Beavers' lead to 5-2 with a two-run single up the middle.

Ojeda sent a solo blast over the wall in center in the fifth and Furmaniak added a bases-loaded single to score another in the sixth.

In the top of the first, Freddie Bynum reached on a leadoff single for the River Cats (55-41) and scored when Andrew Beattie got on with a three-base error that went off the glove of Johnson in center field. Beattie later scored on a double-play groundout by Jack Cust.

Former Beaver Jermaine Clark doubled in a run in the ninth to round out the scoring.

NOTES: Johnson has 12 RBIs over his last three games with the Beavers, dating back to late June before he was recalled by the Padres ... the Padres purchased the contract of Beavers starter Clay Hensley on Monday as part of a busy day of transactions.
