Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Iowa Cubs (45-49) scored single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings to foil another strong individual performance by an Isotopes pitcher and upend Albuquerque 2-0 Tuesday night at Principal Park. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak for the âTopes, who fell to 53-44 on the year.
Albuquerque starter Ariel Prieto allowed just three hits through six frames, while counterpart Todd Wellemeyer (2-2) was just as dominant with seven innings of three-hit ball as the teams played to a scoreless tie heading into the bottom of the seventh. But Mike Fontenot sparked a one-out rally for Iowa with a triple off âTopes reliever and former I-Cub Bryan Corey (2-4) and scored on a double by Rich Lewis.
Wellemeyer, Talley Haines, and Jermaine Van Buren, who picked up his 16th save of the season, combined to shut out the Isotopes for just the third time in 2005. The I-Cubs added a run for good measure in the following inning Corey Patterson doubled home Calvin Murray to close out the scoring.
The âTopes could muster just three hits for the game - two singles by Joe Dillon and a double by Wilson Delgado - to match a season low. The defeat comes one night after Ismael Valdez, Cad Bentz, and Ben Howard combined to shut out Iowa in a 4-0 Albuquerque victory.
Albuquerque will continue its four-game set in Des Moines Wednesday with right-hander Frank Castillo (7-6, 4.87) taking on Iowa left-hander Rich Hill (3-1, 3.66). The first-place Isotopes will return home on July 26 for an eight-game homestand that will be kicked off by an Orbit Bobblehead giveaway, one of the most highly anticipated Isotopes promotions all season courtesy of Coca-Cola.
Other highlights include baseball giveaways on July 27 courtesy of CASA Automotive, free Louisville Slugger replica bats for the kids courtesy of Comcast, and the triumphant return of Myron Noodleman, complete with special boobleheads on July 30 presented by ABC Seamless. Tickets are available at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at local Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and Ticketmaster by phone at 883-7800.
