Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ON- The Brampton Beast may not have come out dressed in camouflage, but it was duck hunting season at the Powerade Centre nonetheless. The home team offense unloaded six bullets into the back of the Mallards net to even the season series at six games a piece with a convincing 6-2 victory.
On Mandarin Lunar Celebration Day Grant Rollheiser led the way, standing on his head and making 41 saves in the win. Cal Wild scored two goals including one just after the penalty kill, while Justin Donati was a beast in his own right, with a goal and three assists. David Ling and Mathew Maione added three points apiece in what was one of the Beast's most impressive wins at home all season.
The Brampton fans were in store for a treat, as the Beast celebrated the Chinese New Years in style with multiple different actions through out the night. Fans were greeted with fortune cookies at the door as well as treated to a lantern escapade during the Beast's trademark laser show. Fans and Beast staff in attendance also wore red to help celebrate the Year of the Ram with the Chinese community.
The first period was absolutely fantastic for the Beast. It was a back and forth, up and down hockey game between the familiar foes, with both teams trading chances up until the nine-minute mark of the game. The Mallards' Bennet Schneider went off for tripping and the Beast went to work on their first power play of the game. After gaining entry into the zone, every Beast player touched the puck before Justin Donati dumped it around the net. David Ling got the puck on his stick in stride and one-touch passed the puck in front of the net to Cal Wild, who made no mistake, beating Quad City's Parker Milner high glove for a 1-0 lead. The Mallards came back to tie the game five minutes later, when Matt Duffy scored his eighth power play goal of the season after Riley Austin took an interference penalty. Less than two minutes after that, Steve Tarasuk walked into the Mallards zone and wired a wrist shot that beat Parker Milner high glove for a 2-1 Beast lead heading into the second stanza.
The second period was not what the Beast wanted to see, although it yielded the desired results. The Mallards tied the game less than four minutes into the frame. The Beast were on the power play, and after a turnover within the Mallards blue line, Quad City broke out on a 2-on-1. The puck found its way onto the blade of Justin Fox, and he potted his 17th of the year for a 2-2 tie. The Beast were outshot 18-4 during the second frame and did not register a shot until around the 15-minute mark of the period, when they finally regained their footing. After an offensive zone draw, the puck made its way back to Steve Tarasuk, who's pass tip-toed across the line onto the stick of Mathew Maione, who rifled a blast top shelf to restore the Beast's one goal lead. With less than a minute left in the period, the Beast applied pressure again, and Justin Donati finished with a turn around wrist shot to put the Beast up 4-2.
After Jason Pitton went to the box for cross-checking early in the third period, Cal Wild added his first short-handed goal of the season and second goal of the game on a short-handed break. Wild and Stephon Thorne broke into the Mallards zone on a 2-on-1, with Wild looking off Thorne and sniping a shot over the shoulder of Parker Milner. Towards the end of the period, David Ling added a power play marker to put the Beast up 6-2.
Wild Weekend continues for the Beast on Sunday as the first 1000 fans in attendance will receive a free Cal Wild relica jersey, with Wild's name on the back and 'C' on the front on Jersey Giveaway Day. Monday will be the Beast's first ever sell out game thanks to our corporate partners purchasing sections of tickets to donate to area school children. Tickets can be purchased online at bramptonbeast.com or by calling 905-564-1684.
