Hershey Bears News Release
Last Week: The BEARS began the week with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Springfield Falcons at GIANT Center on Wednesday. A sellout crowd of 10,572 saw Shane Willis score his 14th goal of the season and Tomas Slovak pick up a goal and an assist as Peter Budaj earned his second shutout of the season. HERSHEY fired 51 shots on goal in the game, including 23 in the first period alone. The BEARS then traveled to Wilkes-Barre Friday night for a date with the Penguins and lost 4-2 at Wachovia Arena. Steve Brule and Shane Willis provided the offense with single goals in the defeat. Eric Perrin picked up two assists in the contest as well. Saturday night saw another sellout crowd at GIANT Center along with a local television audience as the game was telecast by ABC-27, but the BEARS fell to the Philadelphia Phantoms 2-0. Tom Lawson absorbed the loss in goal as a crowd of 10,669 looked on. HERSHEY has now dropped eight straight games to Philadelphia dating back to November 2nd.
Notables: Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell was among the 10,669 fans at GIANT Center Saturday night. It was the first time the Governor attended a BEARS game since taking office. Shane Willis had a four-game goal streak snapped in the shutout loss Saturday. The four-game streak tied a BEARS season high. Travis Brigley also scored goals in four straight from October 18th to October 25th. HERSHEY acquired right wing Dennis Bonvie in a trade with the Binghamton Senators Friday. Bonvie made his BEARS debut Saturday night, and finished the night with a fight against Philadelphia's Mike Siklenka. Defenseman Dean Arsene was recalled on Wednesday from Reading (ECHL) and notched his first point as a Bear Friday night in a 4-2 loss at Wilkes-Barre. Eric Perrin begins the week ranked third in the American Hockey League in scoring with 47 points. He trails only Manchester's Pavel Rosa and Cleveland's Miroslav Zalesak. Zalesak leads the league with 52 points. Center Gavin Morgan had successful surgery on his broken nose Friday. He was injured when he took a shot from Springfield's Todd Reirden in the face Wednesday night in the second period. He is expected to be out for two weeks. The BEARS have not won back-to-back home games this season.
Colorado Update: The Avalanche won at Pittsburgh Saturday night 5-3 over the Penguins. Steve Moore collected an assist on a Joe Sakic goal in the first period. Phil Sauve won his seventh game of the season, making 25 saves. Colorado begins the week with a three-point lead over the second place Vancouver Canucks in the NHL's Northwest Division. The Avalanche also enjoy an 11 point lead now on the third place Calgary Flames. The Avs will return to Pepsi Center for a game with the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow at 9:00 p.m. Following the game with the Oilers, Colorado will head to southern California for a game with the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night before playing at Anaheim Friday evening at Arrowhead Pond.
Tampa Bay Update: With three games in hand on second place Atlanta, the Lightning have built up a six-point lead in the Southeast Division after a 6-2 win at Calgary on Saturday night. Martin St. Louis picked up his third career hat trick in the game, and his second of the season. The Bolts will wrap up a four-game road trip tomorrow night here in the Keystone State with a game in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. Tampa will then return home for a game against Pittsburgh Thursday night before hosting a Southeast Division showdown Saturday night with the Atlanta Thrashers. Following the home game Saturday with Bob Hartley's club, Tampa Bay will play seven of its next 11 on the road beginning one week from today in Philadelphia with the Flyers.
