A LOOK AT LAST WEEK (0-2-0-0)
Monday Vs. Hartford Loss 5-0
Friday Vs. Chicago Loss 2-1
Saturday Vs. Chicago Loss 5-1
The Utah Grizzlies finished the week with five straight losses after Chicago and Frederic Cassivi effectively stifled their offense, allowing only two goals in as many games. The Grizzlies first fell to Chicago on Friday at the 'E' Center when, after the Grizzlies tied the game in the second period, Chicago's Stephan Baby put in the game winner late in the third to help the Wolves to their third straight victory. The first score of the game came only 20 seconds after face-off when Chicago's Derek MacKenzie went into traffic and flicked the puck over Jason Bacashihua's shoulder. It was MacKenzie's 4th point in his last two games. Utah regrouped in the second period with a game tying goal by Mathias Tjarnqvist on Chicago netminder Frederic Cassivi. The goal, Tjarnqvist's 6th of the season, came on the powerplay the 14:25 mark, one of only two powerplay opportunities that the Grizzlies enjoyed during the game. The Wolves and Grizzlies traded shots in the third period, each posting eight. It wasn't until the 15:44 mark that Chicago's Stephen Baby forced the puck past Bacashihua and recorded the game winning goal. Bacashihua finished with 24 saves and Cassivi picked up the win with 25 stops. The Grizzlies struggled once again to find the net on Saturday and the Chicago Wolves took full advantage picking up a 5-1 decision at the 'E' Center in front of 7,638. Cassivi earned the win for the Wolves with 40 stops. It was the Grizzlies' tenth straight loss to the Wolves dating back to last season. Chicago began the night much like they did Friday's contest, scoring early and fending off Utah's staggering offense. Mike Weaver began the effort catching the net at the 3:40 mark. The Grizzlies could have done without the stroke of bad luck that followed at the 13:31 mark as Wolves center Kevin Doell passed the puck softly in the general direction of Utah netminder Dan Ellis and it was kicked inadvertently into the net by Grizzly Steve Gainey. Ellis finished with 34 saves. Steve Maltais, who finished with two goals, added a third score for the Wolves at 17:56 of the second period and Brendan Yarema made the tally 4-0 at 6:41 of the third before Utah was able to answer. It was Jarrod Skalde who denied the shutout, registering his 17th goal of the season at the 7:54 mark off a Tim Wedderburn assist. Steve Maltais would conclude the scoring for the Wolves on the power play at the 13:02 mark. Chicago went 2-for-4 on the power play.
