The Weekend Road Splits for Moose,\'Runners

January 26, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

A return to the Winnipeg Arena didn't prove as successful for the Manitoba Moose as was hoped, as a weekend series with the Toronto Roadrunners provided only a split and two of a possible four points. Coming on the heels of a gruelling eight-game in 12-day stretch which saw the Moose win only once, their winless streak was strecthed to six games with a 4-0 shutout loss on Friday. That streak was snapped though thanks to a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon. This weekend, the Moose will once again hit the ice only twice, hosting the defending Calder Cup Champion Houston Aeros Friday night and Saturday night.

MOOSE NOTES

The Moose participated in five games involving the AHL's recently completed experiment with an expanded neutral zone and thicker lines. In those five games, the most of any team in the AHL, the Moose finished with a record of 1-2-2-0.

Fedor Fedorov was the only Moose player to register more than one point this week. He had a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-2 victory over the Toronto Roadrunners.

Defenceman Jaroslav Obsut was recalled by the Vancouver Canucks Monday, January 26 for the third time this season. In his previous two recalls, Obsut failed to see any action with the Canucks. Obsut's third recall is the most of any Moose player this season. Tyler Moss, Ryan Kesler and Nathan Smith have each been recalled twice this season. In 2002-03, both Brandon Reid and Nolan Baumgartner were recalled by the Canucks three separate times.

Rookie Ryan Kesler has not played a game at the Winnipeg Arena since November 22, 2003. After being recalled by the Canucks on November 23, 2003, he was re-assigned to the Moose while the team was on the road on December 12. However, Kesler then joined Team USA at the World Junior Championships in Finland. He returned to the Moose again on January 9, 2004 in Rochester, but was recalled by Vancouver a second time on January 16.

The two goals in 12 seconds on Saturday vs. the Roadrunners by Fedor Fedorov and Nathan Smith were the fastest two goals scored by the Moose this season. The Fastest two goals in franchise history was Bill Bowler and Jason MacDonald vs. Kansas City 10/3/1999 (7 seconds).

Jason King played his first game for the Manitoba Moose this season against the Roadrunners on Saturday. The NHL rookie had a point before returning to the Vancouver Canucks at the conclusion of the game. Last year, the Corner Brook, NF native had 20 goals and 40 points in 67 games with Manitoba. In 43 games with Vancouver so far this season, King has 11 goals and 19 points.

Tyler Bouck and Alex Auld were reassigned to the Moose this week. Bouck failed to register a point in five games in his first recall this year, while Auld was 2-1-2 in five games with Vancouver. This year, Bouck has 21 points in 43 games for Manitoba, while Auld is 6-9-1 in 16 appearances for the Moose with a GAA of 2.67 and a .908 save percentage.
