Hershey Bears News Release
HERSHEY - The 2006 Calder Cup Champion HERSHEY BEARS announced today in conjunction with the NHL's Washington Capitals that the team has reached an agreement to extend the club's affiliation agreement with the Capitals through the 2007-08 season. The announcement was made today by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst and Capitals VP/General Manager George McPhee
The partnership between the BEARS and Capitals produced instant results in the first year of the affiliation. Behind a mix of AHL veterans and Washington draft picks, HERSHEY won the club's ninth Calder Cup championship in 2005-06. After a 44-win regular season, the BEARS won ten straight playoff games to open up the postseason, ultimately defeating the Milwaukee Admirals four games to two to claim the championship. The new agreement between the teams ensures that Washington's top prospects will remain in HERSHEY through the 2007-08 season.
"This is a great day for the HERSHEY BEARS and for hockey in central Pennsylvania", said BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst. "Our affiliation has produced great success for our on-ice product, and the working relationship between the Capitals and BEARS off the ice has been equally as successful. We could not be happier to extend what has already been a fruitful partnership".
The BEARS will be honored at Verizon Center tonight as the Capitals take on the Philadelphia Flyers at 7:00 p.m. The Calder Cup will be on display on the main concourse, and BEARS goaltender Frederic Cassivi will be available to sign autographs.
"Our affiliation with the HERSHEY BEARS has been nothing short of remarkable", said Capitals VP/General Manager George McPhee. "They have enjoyed great success on the ice and the organization and the Hershey community have treated our prospects well off the ice. It's been a great partnership in every way".
The BEARS conclude a five-game road trip this Friday and Saturday before returning home to face the Albany River Rats Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m Tickets are available at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 508-BEAR.
