Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

The announcement was not officially made until early in the day Monday, but Atlanta Braves right-hander Brandon Beachy turned up in Chattanooga to make his latest rehab start for Mississippi. He did not disappoint the Braves or those fans who turnded out to watch him.

Beachy's 80-pitch outing was nothing spectacular, as the Lookouts put up six hits over five innings, but he got his walk total down to a singleton. He allowed three runs, all earned, and struck out four in a 5-3 win for the M-Braves. He allowed a solo homer to his opposite number -- former Braves farmhand Kyle Cofield -- but he also drew a walk and was on base when Luis Nunez cracked a grand slam for his first home run of the season.

Last season, Nunez was a member of the Lookouts and tied an all-time club record with eight RBIs in a game. Last night, his second inning grand slam was enough.

Another pitcher the Braves have signed out of independent league play, right-hander Mitch Atkins, followed Beachy and worked three shutout innings in his 2013 debut, allowing two hits.

Versatile Barrett Kleinknecht, making a start at first for Mississippi, responded with three hits, including a solo home run.

The Lookouts, down early, came back strong with two runs in the home half of the second against Beachy. Joc Pederson, breaking out of a nagging slump, followed an Ozzie Martinez double with a base hit, stolen second and both runnners would score on ground ball outs. But the only other run the Braves allowed was the solo homer by reliever Cofield in the fifth.

Starter Onelki Garcia (0-3) struggled from the opening inning, lasting only two innings despite striking out four and getting a hit himself. Chris Reed, who normally would have started Monday, was restricted to one inning because of a lengthy outing in Mobile last time. In all, five Lookouts pitchers allowed 11 Mississippi hits.

Brian Calvazos-Galvez had two hits and a stolen base for Chattanooga, now 26-31 with its fourth straight defeat. The same teams meet Tuesday in Game Three of the series at 7:15 at AT&T Field.
