Brandon Beachy to Rehab With M-Braves

PEARL, MS - RHP Brandon Beachy's rehab assignment has been transferred to Double-A Mississippi from Low-A Rome. He will start tonight's game at Chattanooga. In other moves, RHP Mitch Atkins was signed by the Atlanta Braves and assigned to Double-A Mississippi. LHP Thomas Keeling was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for third baseman Juan Francisco. Keeling was assigned to Double-A Mississippi. LHP Cole McCurry was promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Beachy, 26, underwent Tommy John surgery on June 21, 2012, to reconstruct a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Prior to his surgery, Beachy had posted a record of 5-5 and a ERA of 2.00 in 13 starts. Beachy began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on May 24, working four innings (2 H, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 3 K). He made his second start with Low-A Rome on May 29, tossing five frames (3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K).

The Indiana native was originally signed by the Braves as a non-drafted free agent on July 22, 2008. Beachy went 3-1 with a 1.47 ERA in 27 games (six starts) for the M-Braves in 2010. He was called up to Triple-A Gwinnett in late July, going 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA in eight games. Beachy later made his MLB debut with the A-Braves on September 20, 2010. In three starts for Atlanta, he went 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA. Beachy joined the Atlanta rotation full time in 2011, going 7-3 with a 3.68 ERA in 25 starts.

Atkins, 27, was 3-2 with a 3.97 ERA in seven starts for the Independent Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League before signing with the Braves. He made his Major League debut with the Chicago Cubs on July 29, 2009. He spent seven seasons in the Cubs organization and appeared in seven games with the big league club. After signing a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals last season, Atkins went 6-9 with a 4.87 ERA in 28 games, 20 starts, for Triple-A Syracuse.

A native of North Carolina, Atkins was originally selected by the Cubs in the seventh round of the 2004 draft. Atkins was named as a 2006 Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star, a 2007 Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star and a 2008 Southern League All-Star. Following the 2010 season, Atkins signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles. Atkins made three starts for the Orioles but spent most of the 2011 season with High-A Frederick (0-1, 3.00), Double-A Bowie (1-2, 3.38) and Triple-A Norfolk (3-7, 5.44).

Keeling, 25, was 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA and one save in 17 relief appearances for Double-A Huntsville. He'd struck out 19 batters while walking 10. The Texas native was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 18th round of the 2010 draft out of Oklahoma State University. In his career, Keeling is 5-9 with a 6.73 ERA. He's recorded three saves and struck out 122 batters in 112.1 innings of work.

McCurry, 27, has bounced between Triple-A Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi throughout the season. He had a 3.38 ERA in four outings, one start, for the M-Braves. McCurry is 1-1 with one save and a 4.26 ERA in 13 outings for the Gwinnett Braves. He was acquired by the Braves from Baltimore for cash considerations on June 16, 2012.

The Mississippi roster has 25 active players, 5 disabled and 1 ML rehab.
