Jackson Generals News Release

KODAK, TN. (JUNE 3, 2013) - The Jackson Generals' (23-30) offense never got kick-started Monday, scoring only one run and were swept in their doubleheader against the Tennessee Smokies (30-26). The Smokies got a complete-game, seven-hit shutout from Kyle Hendricks (W, 6-2, 2.21), grabbing a 2-0 win in the first game. Taking their momentum into the second game, Tennessee pounded out 10 hits in a 7-1 victory.

The matinee of the two games featured 14 hits, including six doubles and a triple. One of those doubles began the bottom of the first, coming off the bat of leadoff hitter Matt Szczur. An RBI single by designated hitter Arismendy Alcantara later in the inning put Tennessee up a run and proved to be the only offense the Smokies would need in the first game. They would tack on another in the fifth for insurance and give another loss to Generals' starter Taijuan Walker.

Walker (L, 3-6, 2.67) took yet another difficult decision despite five innings of six-hit baseball. Walker struck out five but surrendering two earned runs proved to be costly. This start marked the eighth time in 11 appearances Walker has allowed two earned runs or less. It was also the second straight game the Generals' offense was shutout in a Walker start.

Jackson's offense did not lack opportunities, just the ability to cash in on the chances. They left eight runners on base and were 2-7 with runners in scoring position.

The nightcap looked very similar for the Generals, unable to get the ball rolling on the offensive side. They were held scoreless for 11 innings on Monday, but finally broke through in the fifth inning of the second game. Patrick Brady (1-2, RBI, BB) drove in the lone run for the Generals, his first RBI of the year, as they were held to only four hits in the game.

The Smokies were able to put four runs on the board in the fourth, highlighted by a Christian Villanueva two-run home run. With the two wins, Tennessee is now 7-3 in their last 10 games and 6-1 against the Generals this season.

Game three of the series will begin at 6:15 CST. Chance Ruffin (2-2, 2.72) will take the mound after ten days of rest. Yeiper Castillo (0-1, 4.66) will get the ball for the Smokies. You can listen to the pre-game show at 6:00 p.m CST. on 96.5 ESPN Radio, TuneIn Radio App. and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com followed by the game.
