KODAK, Tenn. - The Chicago Cubs have named Tennessee Smokies pitcher Kyle Hendricks as the organization's minor league pitcher of month for May. This is the first organizational award for Hendricks, and second for a member of the Smokies pitching staff this season.

Hendricks was 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA (7 ER/32.1 IP) in five starts for Tennessee in the month of May. The 23-year-old right-hander struck out 25 batters, while walking only five and limiting opposing batters to a .230 batting average. In four of his five starts in the month, Hendricks allowed three or less runs to score, going at least 6.2 innings in those starts. He has currently won his last four starts for the Smokies.

The Newport Beach, Calif. native holds a 5-2 record with a 2.47 ERA (16 ER/ 58.1 IP) in 10 starts for Tennessee this season. He ranks tied for fifth in the Southern League in wins and is fourth in ERA. Since being drafted in 2011, Hendricks holds a career 13-12 record with a 2.72 ERA (73 ER/ 241.2 IP) in 56 appearances (35 starts).

Originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round of the 2011 draft out of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., Hendricks was traded to the Cubs in 2012, along with teammate Christian Villanueva, for RHP Ryan Dempster.
