Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

NORMAL, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums took advantage of three Normal CornBelters errors in the first four innings, scoring seven unearned runs leading Traverse City to a 9-3 win on Saturday night.

In the first, Ryan Still led off with a walk. Taylor Wrenn chopped a ball back of the mound. Normal starter Ross Davis came off the mound to field the ball, but bounced the throw past first baseman Mike Schwartz to put runners on second and third. After Davis got a pair of outs, he walked Carlo Testa on four pitches to load the bases. Zach Kometani stood in and took the first pitch he saw from Davis over the leftfield wall for a grand slam and a 4-0 TC lead.

The Beach Bums added to the lead in the third as another CornBelters error opened the door. With Testa and Kometani got things started with a pair of two out walks. On the first pitch to Marcus Nidiffer, Testa broke for third. Nidiffer grounded a ball to short that was fielded by Pat Mckenna, but his throw to second pulled Santiago Chirino off the bag allowing Kometani to be safe. Testa never slowed around third, coming into score and making it 5-0. Sean Gusrang made Normal pay even more as he laced a double down the rightfield line, scoing Kometani and Nidiffer and pushing the lead to 7-0.

Normal got all three of the runs back in the bottom of the third as RBI singled from Matt Wright and Mike Mobbs were sandwiched around a sac fly by McKenna to make it 7-3.

Traverse City capped the scoring for the game in the fourth as Still walked to open the inning. Two batters later Jose Vargas homered to right to make it 9-3. For Vargas, it was his 10th career homerun against Normal in just 14 games.

Johnny Omahen (2-3) picked up the win pitching five innings, only allowing the runs in the third. Chris Squires and Matt Miller each pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen with Miller fanning three of the six batters he faced. Ross Davis (2-3) took the loss for the CornBelters

The rubber game of the series comes up on Sunday with Jacob Clem (4-3, 5.31) facing off against Ryan Demmin (2-2, 1.86) for Normal. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm with the Budweiser Pregame Show on Sunny Country 101.9 FM beginning at 6:40 pm. The Beach Bums return home on Tuesday for a nine-game homestand beginning against the Schaumburg Boomers on a Two For Tuesday with 2-for-1 pricing on all chairback seats.
