Grizzlies Cruise by Slammers for Third Straight Win

JOLIET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies offense recorded a season-high 16 hits and they cruised by the Joliet Slammers 9-5 Saturday night at Silver Cross Field.

Jet Butler, Jon Myers and Max Ayarza all recorded three-hit games for the Grizzlies, who won for the third straight game. The win assured the Grizzlies their eighth series win of the season in 11 series.

Gateway (21-10) started their scoring in the second inning with a two-run home run from Jon Myers.

Myers blasted another long ball to lead off the fourth inning which gave the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead. It was the third multi home run game of the season for Myers, who is now tied for the league-lead in home runs with nine.

Butler and Antone DeJesus drove in a run on singles in the fifth to extend the Gateway advantage to five runs.

Joliet scored two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh before Gateway answered with a four run eighth. Jose Flores picked up a two-run double and Landon Hernandez capped off the Grizzlies scoring with a two-run home run, which was his sixth of the season.

Joliet scored two runs off of Jason Sullivan in the ninth inning. Sullivan fired three and a third innings and picked up his first save of the season.

Rookie right-hander Brett Higginbotham (1-0) started and picked up his first professional win. The right-hander from Hutto, TX threw five scoreless innings in his second pro appearance and his first start.

The Grizzlies, who lead the West Division by two games, will look for the sweep against the Slammers Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Gregg Downing (2-2) will get the start. First pitch is set for 2:05 at Silver Cross Field.
