TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums couldn't solve Southern Illinois Miners starting pitcher and former Beach Bum Shawn Joy as he pitched eight innings of one-run baseball as they took the first game of a three-game series in front of 5,013 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 5-1.

The crowd was the second biggest of the 2011 season. With the loss, the Beach Bums fall to 36-34, while Southern Illinois falls to 43-26 on the season. Joy (5-3) pitched an impressive eight innings for the Miners allowing a run on just four hits in earning his fifth win in 2011. Beach Bums starter Scott Dunn (5-3) pitched seven solid innings but didn't receive much run support as he suffered his third loss of the season.

The Miners scored four times in the first two innings of the contest to open up a 4-0 lead. The big hit came in the second inning when Miners second baseman Justin Randall lined a two-out, three-run triple down the first base line to allow Southern Illinois to open up a four run advantage.

The Beach Bums would go without a base runner until first baseman Jeff Flagg lined a single into right field with two outs in the fifth inning. In the seventh, third baseman Jose Vargas launched his eighth home run of the season to account for the only Beach Bums offense of the contest.

The Beach Bums-Miners series continues on Celebrity Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Beach Bums welcome the Star Wars costuming group, the 501st Legion, for Celebrity Saturday.
