Southern Illinois Miners News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Miners overcame a two-run deficit in the seventh inning to take a 6-5 victory over the Rockford RiverHawks Thursday night at Road Ranger Stadium. With the win, the Miners took two of three from the Hawks and extended their lead in the wildcard race to nine and a half games.
Will Block drove home Eric Suttle with the game winning sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie. Suttle reached on a one-out walk. He stole second base and moved to third base when the throw from the catcher went into center field.
Ryan Quigley tossed a scoreless eight to earn the win, and Clayton Dill pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Rockford closer Brett Durand blew the save in the eighth and took the loss in the ninth.
Rockford reliever Corey Frerichs walked Sean Coughlin and Nate Hall in the eighth and left after Ken Gregory singled to score Coughlin. That cut the Rockford lead to 5-4. Durand entered the game, attempting his first five-out save of the season. After Sean Harrell struck out, Justin Randall hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 5-5. Randall had two RBIs in the game.
Southern Illinois took a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Eric Suttle and Will Block hit back to back two-out singles.
Miners starter B.J. Dail left after allowing a leadoff single in the third inning. He was recovering from a two-day bout with food poisoning. Dail allowed a run off four hits.
Darrin Tew replaced Dail and threw four innings in relief. He had allowed just two runs when he left the game tied at 3-3 with two men on and no one out in the seventh. Both runners scored to give Rockford a 5-3 lead.
The Miners defenders turned a season best five double plays in the game. Four of those twin killings ended a Rockford inning.
The Miners will continue the road trip Friday in Traverse City with the start of a three-game series with the Beach Bums. Southpaw Shawn Joy (3-3, 4.30) will make the start for Southern Illinois. Traverse City will throw Scott Dunn (5-2, 1.81). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Central Time from Wuerfel Park. The Miners return home on Tuesday, Aug. 9 for a 7:05 p.m. game against Rockford.
