Southern Illinois Miners News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - A career night from Shawn Joy lifted the Miners to a 5-1 victory over the Beach Bums in the first game of a three-game series at Wuerfel Park. Joy struck out a career high eight batters in eight innings to improve his record to 5-3. Traverse City starter Scott Dunn allowed four runs in seven innings to take his third loss the year.

The Miners broke the game open in the second inning. With Southern Illinois already up 1-0, Sean Harrell and Ken Gregory hit back-to-back two-out singles. Following Boomer Blanchard's walk, Justin Randall hit a three-run triple to extend the lead to 4-0.

That would be more than enough for Joy, who was nearly untouchable. He retired the first 14 batters he faced before surrendering a two-out single in the fifth inning. He then retired the next five batters in a row. The eight-inning outing was the longest of the former Beach Bum's career. He allowed just four hits.

Traverse City's only run came on Jose Vargas' solo home run in the seventh.

Dunn pitched seven innings and did not allow a hit after Randall's triple. Dunn issued two walks and retired the last 10 batters he faced.

Southern Illinois added an empty netter in the eighth inning when Will Block reached on an error, and Nate Hall singled him home against reliever Jeff Cinadr.

Erik Draxton pitched a perfect ninth inning to finish the game.

The Miners will continue the series Saturday when Ryan Zink (4-4, 4.76) takes the mound for Southern Illinois. Traverse City will throw lefty Bryan Barnes (7-1, 2.78). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Central Time from Wuerfel Park. The Miners return home on Tuesday, Aug. 9 for a 7:05 p.m. game against Rockford.
