Last Time Out.

"Captain" Jake Renshaw threw his team leading third complete game of the season as the Joliet Slammers (40-28) swept the Gateway Grizzlies (28-40) with a 3-1 victory Thursday night. Each team scored once in the first as Joliet got their run thanks to a Gateway error on a Hector Pellot single. A home run from Gateway tied it in the bottom half of the first. The Slammers finally grabbed the lead for good in the eighth. With one away Pellot tallied his second single of the night. Then Lis stepped to the plate and unloaded on a pitch for his team leading 16th home run of the season. Renshaw went the distance, scattering six hits, surrendering the lone run, walking two and striking out seven. For Renshaw it was his eighth win of the year, tying him for the league lead. It was also his third complete game in his last five starts. Renshaw threw 103 pitches, 71 of them for strikes in the victory.

For Starters.

Brian Fowler is coming off a loss to the Traverse City Beach Bums on July 30 as he gave up six runs, four of them earned in five and two thirds innings. Despite the recent loss, he still has the lowest ERA (2.47) among Slammers' starting pitchers. The 6'7'' lefty started this season in the Pecos League with the Roswell Invaders where he went 3-0 with a 2.86 ERA in six appearances, three starts. He's a graduate of Chico State University where he played two years of ball after transferring from Treasure Valley Community College. Fowler hails from Missoula, Montana.

Undefeated in August.

The Slammers (4-0) and the Rascals (3-0) are the only teams in the Frontier League who have yet to lose in the month of August.

Streaking..

The Slammers currently have a four game winning streak for the first time in 2011. They've had seven different three game winning streaks and have not lost more than three in a row.

Putting the ball in play.

Catcher Ben Hewett is the only Slammer who doesn't have more K's than BB's. He has 11 of each.

The best of the best.

The Slammers have the best ERA in the entire Frontier League at 3.58. In addition, they've held opponents to a league low .237 batting average. The bullpen has been especially strong, compiling an ERA of 2.82.

#Winning.

The Slammers are a season high 4.5 games up in the East Division. They've held first place by themselves since the end of play on July 8th. Before then they had not held first place by themselves all year. The Slammers are also a season high of 12 games over .500.

Road Warriors.

The Slammers have won five of their last six series on the road. In addition, they've swept three of those series as they swept Gateway last series, Lake Erie July 27-29, and Normal right before the All-Star break. Joliet's record of 21-15 on the road is the best in the East Division and second best in the Frontier League. With a win today the Slammers would set a new long road winning streak of the year as they've currently won six in a row away from Silver Cross Field for the second time this season.

Aggression.

Joliet's hitters like to swing the bat as evidenced by their league low 228 walks.

Leading after six.

The Slammers are almost unbeatable with a record of 28-1 when leading after six innings. However they are 5-25 when trailing after six.

The team triple crown.

Erik Lis leads the Slammers in batting average (.319), Home Runs (16) and RBI (60).
