Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

BOWIE, MD - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (25-28) jumped on top early and rode eight scoreless innings from left-hander Ryan Verdugo to a, 4-0, victory over the Bowie Baysox (26-29) on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Squirrels and allowed them to salvage the finale of a three-game series.

The Squirrels got started quickly against Bowie right-hander Zach Clark in the first inning. Charlie Culberson cracked a one-out single to spark the uprising. With Culberson running, Nick Noonan lined a single into left field. Culberson took third base, and when LJ Hoes threw wildly toward third base, Noonan scampered into second base. Clark delivered a wild-pitch that brought in Culberson for a 1-0 lead. Jose Flores capped the inning when he sliced an opposite-field single into left field to plate Noonan for a 2-0 Richmond advantage.

Meanwhile, Verdugo was rolling. He got some dazzling defense behind him, and didn't allow a hit through the first five innings. The Baysox didn't register their first hit of the ballgame until there were two outs in the sixth inning. Carlos Rojas registered a two-out double into the alley in right-center field, but Verdugo struck out Xavier Avery to keep the Squirrels' lead intact.

Clark (5-4) righted the ship after his tough first inning, and held the Squirrels at bay through the eighth. However, the two early runs he surrendered doomed him to his fourth loss of the season. He permitted seven hits, walked three and struck out four. Richmond tacked on their final two runs of the ballgame in the ninth inning, with one charged to Clark and the final run tagged to left-hander Cole McCurry.

Verdugo ultimately worked eight scoreless innings, turning in his longest career outing. He saved his best work for the end, recording seven of his franchise-record tying 10 strikeouts over his last three innings of work. The lefty allowed just one hit and walked one.

Right-hander Jason Stoffel preserved the fourth shutout of the season for the Squirrels, working a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation. Richmond finished their week-long road-trip with a record of 2-5, but avoided what would have been their lengthiest losing skid of the season.

The Squirrels will return to Richmond, VA, to open a three-game weekend series with the Reading Phillies (Philadelphia Phillies). The series opener is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Friday night. LHP Eric Surkamp (3-2, 1.33) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Austin Hyatt (5-3, 4.42) for the R-Phils.
