New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, N.H.- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH) are pleased to announce that over 7,000 students from 145 different schools completed the 2011 CCSNH Reading Challenge, more than tripling the number of students to complete the program a year ago.

"Strong reading skills lay a foundation for success," said CCSNH Communications Director Shannon Reid. "The Fisher Cats/CCSNH Reading Challenge is a fun and particularly New Hampshire-centered way to encourage kids to read and help them make the connection between literacy and college readiness."

Children were encouraged to increase their reading efforts outside of the classroom by reading five books not included in their normal curriculum. As a reward, each student who successfully completed the challenge received a pair of tickets, courtesy of CCSNH, to a Fisher Cats/CCSNH Reading Challenge Night this season and the opportunity to be recognized in a parade around the field at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium prior to the game.

"We are elated that so many children were motivated to take it upon themselves to better their reading and literacy," said Matt Person, Fisher Cats Vice President of Business Operations. "The commitment of the schools, teachers and parents who helped these children to participate in the CCSNH Reading Challenge is extraordinary and proves that there is a bright future ahead for the youth of our community."

Faculty members of St. Elizabeth Seton School, Bakersville School, Lyndeborough Central School, Maude H. Trefethen Elementary School and Errol Consolidated Elementary school have been invited to receive congratulatory recognition at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on June 7 when the Fisher Cats take on the Bowie Baysox at 7:05 p.m. All five schools saw 100-percent of their students complete the reading challenge, and will each be awarded $1,000 from the Fisher Cats Foundation during an on field check presentation on June 7.

The 2012 CCSNH Reading Challenge is slated to begin in late August. Any school wishing to participate should contact Fisher Cats Community Relations and Office Manager, Kim Elefante, at kelefante@nhfishercats.com [mailto:kelefante@nhfishercats.com] or by calling 603-641-2005 ext. 102.

A three-game set with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, will follow beginning on Friday, June 10.
