Chesapeake Baysox News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - The Baysox closed out a nine-game road trip with an 8-2 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs Sunday afternoon. The Sea Dogs are the second team to sweep the Baysox on the road this season, and the first since Erie did it May 8-10. Baysox starter Ryohei Tanaka was charged with the loss after allowing a career-high five runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. His counterpart, right-hander Jarod Plummer, took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before allowing a single to right by third baseman Josh Bell.

Portland jumped out in front in the first inning on a solo home run by Ryan Kalish, and the Sea Dogs never looked back. In the bottom of the third inning, Iggy Suarez led off with a single to left field and moved to second on a walk to Kalish. Jorge Jimenez lifted a double to right field to plate Suarez and Kalish, putting the Baysox down 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Suarez drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a single by Kalish. Tanaka struck out Jimenez and Jon Still before allowing a two-run, two-out double to Daniel Nava. After walking Juan Apodaca to put runners on first and second with two outs, Tanaka was relieved by right-hander Zach Clark. Clark got Luis Exposito to fly out to right to end the inning with the Baysox down 5-0.

The Baysox got on the board in the top of the seventh inning when Bell launched a one-out solo home run to center field off Sea Dogs reliever Chris Province. It was his first home run since being acquired from the Dodgers as part of the George Sherrill trade. Bell was the only Baysox player to record more than one hit in the game, going 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a walk. Portland would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Nava lined a two-run triple to center field to take a 7-1 lead.

The Baysox biggest threat came in the top of the eighth inning. Third baseman Paco Figueroa led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion. Left fielder Dave Krynzel drove Figueroa in with a double to right, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. The hit ended the Baysox 0-for-14 streak with runners in scoring position. Catcher Steve Torrealba drew a walk to load the bases, but center fielder Daniel Figueroa lined out and shortstop Carlos Rojas grounded into a double play to end the inning with the Baysox down 7-2.

James Hoey relieved Clark to start the bottom of the eighth inning, and walked Jason Place and Suarez to start the inning. Kalish singled to right to load the bases with nobody out and Place scored as Jimenez grounded into a double play. Hoey struck out Still to end the inning with the Baysox down 8-2.

After being retired in order in the top of the ninth inning, the Baysox fell to 60-54 on the season, 10.5 games behind the division-leading Akron Aeros.
