Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOSTON, MA. - Portland left fielder Jason Place brought home all three of the Sea Dogs runs as they upended the Baysox 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the Futures at Fenway game in Boston. For the second night in a row the Baysox offense failed to get a hit with runners in scoring position, as they fall to 60-53 on the season and 3.0 games in back of second place Reading in the Southern Division.
Right-hander Steve Johnson made his second start for the Baysox since being acquired in the trade for Orioles closer George Sherrill. The Maryland native pitched well, holding the Sea Dogs to two earned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work while walking three and striking out seven. Both of his runs came in the second inning, as Place connected for his first home run of the season to give his team a 2-0 advantage.
Johnson's counterpart, left-hander Felix Doubront came out firing against a struggling Baysox offense. The southpaw struck out the first four batters he faced, before giving up a single to second baseman Miguel Abreu. The runner was quickly erased on a double-play, and Doubront held the Baysox scoreless through the first four innings.
Doubront ran into trouble in the fifth inning, as right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion led off the inning with a single to get the Baysox started. Catcher Adam Donachie got ahead in the count 1-0 before connecting for a towering two-run blast over the Green Monster in left to tie the game at two. It was Donachie's fourth home run of the season, and first since June 17th while giving him 28 RBI on the season.
Right-hander Ryan Ouellette came on in relief for the Baysox in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Sea Dogs took advantage to break the tie. Ouellette walked Daniel Nava to start the inning and Luis Exposito came through with a base hit to put runners at first and second. A single by Yamaico Navarro loaded the bases, which brought Place to the plate with nobody out. Ouellette drilled Place with a pitch, forcing in a run and putting the Sea Dogs on top 3-2.
After getting through the seventh inning unscathed, Portland skipper Arnie Beyeler went to Dustin Richardson to close out the game for the Sea Dogs. The right-hander set the Baysox down in order in the eighth inning, but allowed a leadoff single to third baseman Paco Figueroa in the ninth inning. With the Baysox threatening, Richardson induced Concepcion to ground into a double-play and finished off the game by getting Donachie to fly out to center.
After taking the first two games of the series, the Baysox look to avoid the sweep as they travel back to Maine on Sunday to finish their three-game set with the Sea Dogs. RHP Ryohei Tanaka (2-1, 1.91 ERA) takes the hill for the Baysox looking for his third straight win. He will be matched up against RHP Jarod Plummer (7-6, 4.16 ERA) for the Sea Dogs. Game time tomorrow is set for 6:05 p.m.
