Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - In a game where neither offense was particularly dominant, the Flying Squirrels jumped out to an early lead and held off the Baysox late as they won the first game of the series 4-2. With the loss, the Baysox fall to 9-15 on the season.
The Baysox once again found themselves trailing early, but were not able to mount a comeback as they did Sunday afternoon in Harrisburg. While Richmond was able to convert their five hits into four runs, thanks to a pair of home runs by Tommy Joseph, the Baysox were only able to manage two runs from six hits as they were never able to get anything going offensively.
Richmond jumped out to an early lead against left-handed starting pitcher Cole McCurry in the bottom of the first inning. Gary Brown drew a leadoff walk to start the game and Joseph homered to left field with one out to give Richmond the early 2-0 lead.
The Flying Squirrels extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Nick Liles hit a two out double to right field and Brown plated him with a single to right field that made the score 3-0.
After going down in order the first time through the line-up, left fielder Antoan Richardson hit a lead off single to left field to start the top of the fourth inning. With one out, center fielder LJ Hoes doubled to center field to score Richardson and make the score 3-1.
Richmond got the run right back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joseph hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to left field to lead off the inning and make the score 4-1.
Bowie closed the gap in the top of the eighth inning against Richmond reliever Tom Vessella. With one out, Hoes and designated hitter Brandon Waring drew back-to-back walks before Daryl Maday replaced Vessella on the mound. Shortstop Manny Machado then singled to center field to plate Hoes and make the score 4-2.
McCurry pitched four and one-third innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out two batters and walking two more in his fourth loss of the season. In his best outing of the season to date, right-handed reliever Sean Gleason pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings to finish out the game for the Baysox. He did not allow a hit, while striking out one batter and walking one more as he kept the team within striking distance late.
Richmond starter Chris Heston earned the win for the Flying Squirrels. He pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight batters. Maday recorded his fifth save of the season for Richmond
The Baysox will play the second game in a four-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels tomorrow evening at 6:35 p.m. RHP Zach Clark (1-1, 5.96) will make the start against LHP Mike Kickham (1-1, 2.55).
