Akron, OH - The Akron Aeros used a two-run rally in the eighth inning Monday night to edge the Binghamton Mets, 3-2, in the opening game of a four-game series at Canal Park.
The victory was the sixth in a row for the Aeros (15-6), who remain in first place in the Western Division of the EL. Second place Harrisburg lost, 1-0, in 12 innings at home against New Britain, leaving Akron with a 2 =C21/2 game lead in the division. Akron has also played well at home this season, winning nine of 11 at Canal Park.
Second baseman Ryan Rohlinger went 3-4 for the Aeros, and delivered a key, RBI single in the eighth that allowed the Aeros to snap a 1-1 tie.
With runners at first and second, Rohlinger slapped a hit past B-Mets third baseman Jefry Marte, who was playing in, expecting the bunt. Chun Chen scored on the play. As the throw from left went home, Akron's Ben Copeland broke for third. The throw went through Marte for an error, allowing Copeland to score to make it 3-1.
The go-ahead runs came against Binghamton reliever Edgar Ramirez (0-1).
The B-Mets scored a run in the ninth against righty Rob Bryson (2-0), and had runners on the corners with two outs when Bryson fanned pinch hitter Rafael Perez to end the game.
Steven Wright started for the Aeros and worked 6 1/3 innings, scattering six hits and allowing only one run. He walked three and struck out five. Through five starts, Wright sports a 1.45 ERA.
Chen and Thomas Neal each chipped in two hits for the Aeros. The B-Mets (12-11) were led by first baseman Travis Ozga, who was 2-4, with a double and RBI.
The Aeros will face the Mets again in the second game of their four-game series on Tuesday at 7:05. Tuesday will be College Fair Day at Canal Park. By visiting with all the colleges, two lucky high school students will be eligible to win a $500 scholarship! Free tickets are available to those who sign up with their guidance counselor or those that bring their student ID to purchase tickets. LHP T.J.
