PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 23rd through April 29th:
Trenton Thunder infielder Yadil Mujica has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 23rd-April 29th. The 27-year old batted .625 (10-for-16) with one triple, six runs scored, two walks, a .667 on-base percentage and a .750 slugging percentage last week while appearing in five games for the Thunder and playing second base, third base and shortstop. Mujica had multiple hits and scored at least one run in all four games he started for the Thunder last week, including going 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored in a 4-3 win at New Hampshire on Saturday. He led off the top of the 11th inning of that game with a walk and came around to score the winning run on a double by Walter Ibarra. The 6'1", 170 lb. native of Matanzas, Cuba, led all Eastern League players in batting average (.625), hits (10) and OPS (1.417) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in on-base percentage (.667-2nd), triples (1-tied 2nd), runs scored (6-tied 3rd) and slugging percentage (.750-5th). Yadil, who joined the Trenton Thunder on April 20th after being transferred from the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, was signed by the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on February 18, 2011.
Tyler Cloyd, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Phillies, has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 23rd-April 29th. The 6'3", 190 lb. hurler made a pair of appearances for the R-Phils last week and had a record of 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 13.0 innings pitched. Cloyd, who is a native of Bellevue, Nebraska, made his first start of the week on Tuesday against the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels and scattered five hits while striking out five over seven shutout innings in Reading's 6-0 victory to improve his record to 3-0 on the season. The 24-year old was equally impressive in his second appearance of the week on Sunday at Portland. He pitched six shutout innings and gave up just one hit while striking out seven batters and walking three, taking a no-decision in the R-Phils 4-2 win. Cloyd led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (12) last week and also ranked among the weekly leaders in ERA (0.00-tied 1st), innings pitched (13.0-2nd), WHIP (0.69-6th) and batting average against (.136-8th). Tyler, who is currently tied for third in the league in wins (3) and is ranked sixth in ERA (1.80), was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 18th round of the 2008 draft out of Bellevue East High School in Nebraska.
