New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Fisher Cats pitcher Deck McGuire and Phillies starter Trevor May engaged in a tight pitcher's duel on Monday night, but a late two-out RBI for the Phillies lifted Reading (16-7) to a series-opening 3-2 win over New Hampshire (10-13) at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The loss evens the Fisher Cats at 2-2 after the first four games, all one-run contests, of their seven-game homestand.
After a bumpy, but scoreless, first inning for each starting pitcher, they settled into a nice rhythm to match zeroes into the fifth. In the bottom of the frame, New Hampshire got to May with a pair of runs. After two singles and a balk, Jonathan Diaz plated the first run with a single to center field. Ryan Goins followed with his team-leading 13th RBI on a groundout to push the Fisher Cats lead to 2-0.
The Phillies answered right back with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth against McGuire. The first scored on a groundout from Cesar Hernandez. Three batters later a two-out single tied the game at 2-2.
McGuire pitched into the seventh for the second straight home start, but a two-out run-scoring single in his final frame pushed the Phillies ahead and knocked McGuire out of the game. He allowed three earned runs over 6.2 innings, giving up eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.
May matched McGuire, but completed seven full innings. He allowed just the pair of fifth inning runs, working around eight hits with seven punch outs. Like McGuire, May did not walk a batter.
Brain Van Kirk and Diaz paced the Fisher Cats offense, tallying two hits each. John Tolisano singled and drew his team-leading 15th walk to extend his on-base streak to 13 games.
The series continues on Tuesday night as the Fisher Cats and U.S. Cellular honor Academic All-Stars for a 6:35 PM first pitch. Tickets are available by calling 603-641-2005, in-person at the Northeast Delta Dental Stadium box office, or by visiting www.nhfishercats.com.
Tuesday's pitching match-up features the 2012 home debut of Yohan Pino (1-0, 3.46) against Reading RHP David Buchanan (1-1, 2.16). You can follow the action with Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman beginning at 6:15 PM on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
