Chesapeake Baysox News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - The Bowie Baysox earned another thrilling victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels Friday night as a tenth inning solo home run by second baseman Ryan Adams carried the Baysox over their division rivals. Bowie has taken the first two games in the four-game series, after another rollercoaster win on Thursday in which the Baysox gave up a 5-2 lead in the eighth inning but reclaimed it with a three-run ninth inning.
The Baysox are now seven games above .500 at 50-43, holding steady in second place in the Eastern League's Western Division, 7.0 games behind league leaders Altoona and 2.5 ahead of third-place Akron. It was the 10th extra-innings game of the year for the Baysox, who have fared well with bonus baseball with a 7-3 record.
Starting pitcher Chorye Spoone pitched 6.0 innings with four runs (two earned) on 10 hits through 6.0 innings. Spoone still leads the Eastern League with 60 walks, but issued only two free passes as he struck out 7 batters. In his last two starts combined, Spoone has thrown 15 strikeouts with four walks in 13.0 innings on the mound.
The Flying Squirrels took a two-run lead in the bottom of the third inning. Outfielder Clay Timpner led off with a single to center field and scored on an error that put Darren Ford on third base after Baysox center fielder Danny Figueroa dropped Ford's fly ball. Ford scored on the next play, when Nick Noonan grounded out to shortstop.
Baysox second baseman Ryan Adams opened the fourth inning with his 27th double of the season, on a line drive to left field. Right fielder Tyler Henson then tied the game with a home run to left field, his 10th of the season. Henson became the fourth Baysox player to reach double digits in home runs, joining catcher Caleb Joseph (10), third baseman Brandon Waring (15) and outfielder Joel Guzman (19); last year Eric Crozier and Brandon Snyder led all Baysox batters with 10 home runs.
Richmond grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Brad Boyer led off with a single to right field, and moved to second when catcher Tyler LaTorre drew a walk with one out. After Spoone struck Timpner out, Ford hit a single to shallow right field that sent Boywer across the plate for a 3-2 lead. LaTorre tried to squeeze one more run out of the play, but was thrown out at the plate as Adams fired the ball to Joseph.
The pendulum continued to swing, as the Baysox tied the game again in the top of the fifth inning. Shortstop Greg Miclat led off with a single to right field and a Carlos Rojas single to right-center field put the runners on the corners for Danny Figueroa. Figueroa grounded to shortstop for a double play, but it was enough to put the ball in play as Miclat sprinted across the plate to level the score at 3-3
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Richmond took a lead that they were finally able to make stick for a while. Thomas Neal hit a one-out double to right field and moved to third as first baseman Brandon Belt grounded out. Third baseman Conor Gillaspie put the Squirrels ahead 4-3 with an infield single to second base that plated Neal.
Figueroa broke a six-game hitless slump with a single to left field in the top of the eighth inning. After a pair of strikeouts, Guzman put runners on the corners with a single to right field. First baseman Joe Mahoney tied the game with a single to right-center field that plated Figueroa.
Neither team could come up with any hits in the ninth inning, as the game pushed towards extra innings. With one out in the top of the 10th inning, Adams blasted the first pitch he saw out of the park to left field, giving the Baysox a 5-4 lead, their first of the game.
Newcomer right-handed pitcher Jose Diaz made the narrow margin count, and secured his first Double-A win of the year, giving up a single in the bottom of the tenth inning and nothing further.
Diaz and bullpen-mate Raul Rivero, who was making his Baysox debut, both had strong games after Spoone left the hill, combining for one hit through four shutout innings with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Baysox will play two more games in Richmond over the weekend, starting Saturday at 6:35 p.m. They return to Bowie for a seven-game home stand against Binghamton and Richmond that begins at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, July 19. That Monday game against Binghamton is the Baysox second annual Mustache Mania, where fans can show their 'stache to save some cash; fans sporting a moustache -- natural, drawn or taped on -- can get a half-priced lower reserved ticket at the box office. Saturday, July 24 is Star Wars Night, one of the most eagerly anticipated events at the ballpark this season, with lightsaber battles between innings by reenactors in authentic replica Star Wars costumes.
