Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Left-hander Clayton Tanner's strong performance led the Richmond Flying Squirrels to a, 5-2, victory over the Bowie Bayson in front of 8,039 at The Diamond on Saturday night. With the win, Richmond snapped a four-game losing-streak.

The Squirrels jumped on top with a pair of runs against Bowie left-hander Rick Zagone (1-1) in third inning. Ryan Lormand sparked the rally with a lead-off single. A batter later, Clay Timpner rifled a triple into center field to bring Lormand around with the game's first run. Darren Ford bounced out to second base to plate Timpner and Richmond enjoyed a 2-0 advantage.

Richmond doubled their lead with another pair of runs against Zagone in the fourth. Conor Gillaspie singled to start the inning and Brad Boyer tripled behind him up the first-base line. Gillaspie came around on Boyer's triple as Richmond expanded their lead to 3-0. Lormand lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to cap the inning with the Squirrels in front, 4-0.

Meanwhile, Tanner (5-6) had the Baysox handcuffed through the first six innings. The lefty allowed just a lone hit and did not allow a Bowie base runner past first base.

Bowie finally got to Tanner in the seventh inning, plating their first run of the night. Joel Guzman singled into left field with one out and moved to second when Tanner walked Brandon Waring. Caleb Joseph singled up the middle to score Guzman, as Bowie cut the Richmond lead to 4-1.

The Baysox picked up a final run against Tanner and finally forced him from the ballgame in the eighth inning. Tanner earned the victory by allowing just two runs over 7 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five as he won for the fifth time on the year.

Zagone recovered to last through seven innings, but he couldn't escape the loss, falling for the first time at the Double-A level. He was charged with four runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out five.

The Squirrels capped the scoring in the ballgame with an insurance-run in the eighth inning against reliever Sean Gleason. Ford supplied an RBI single that scored Lormand with the final run of the ballgame.

Right-hander Mitch Lively nailed down the win for Richmond, finishing the eighth for Tanner and working a perfect ninth. He earned his first save of the season.

The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 5:05 PM on Sunday night at The Diamond. RHP Craig Westcott (0-1, 3.27) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Ryohei Tanaka (4-9, 5.33) for Bowie.
