Rock Cats fall to Portland

New Britain, CT - Portland struck for six runs in the top of the first and never looked back to defeat the Rock Cats, 11-3 before a sellout crowd of 7,018 at New Britain Stadium on Saturday night.

The Sea Dogs jumped on Deolis Guerra out of the gates for seven hits in the top of the first. Che-Hsuan Lin led off the game with a line drive single to center and stole second. Outfielder Jeremy Hermida, who is rehabbing with the Sea Dogs, followed with a double to knock in Lin. Guerra picked up the first out of the inning by forcing a fly out but then Anthony Rizzo hammered an RBI double into left for the 2-0 advantage. Ryan Lavarnway and Jorge Padron each added an RBI single before Chih-Hsien Chiang added a two-run single to break open the game, 6-0.

Joe Benson got the Rock Cats on the board with his team-leading 15th homer, a solo shot over the center field wall to lead off the bottom of the second.

Portland pounded out 14 hits on the night, led by a four-hit performance by Lin. Chiang finished with three hits, including a double. Rizzo and Lavarnway finished with two hits apiece, with both delivering a double and single.

The Rock Cats had 10 hits on the night but only managed to cross the plate three times. Mark Dolenc knocked in a run with a single in the seventh. In the eighth, Benson was hit with a one-out pitch and Steve Singleton doubled to move Benson to third. Jair Fernandez grounded out to shortstop to knock in Benson for the Rock Cats' final run.

Guerra (2-5) finished with seven runs on nine hits and two walks in just three innings of work. Alex Wilson (2-2) picked up the win for Portland, limiting the Rock Cats to two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
