Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ- The Thunder utilized a Justin Christian three-run home run and a dramatic play at the plate in the ninth inning to finish a 4-3 win over Reading on Saturday night. Trenton (56-37) has won four straight and will attempt to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon from Waterfront Park.
RHP Cory Arbiso made his fifth spot-start of the season and fell into trouble in the second inning as Reading recorded three straight hits, topped off by an RBI single by Kevin Nelson to put Reading in front 1-0.
The Thunder answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning as Brandon Laird hit a double and scored on an RBI single down the right field line by Daniel Brewer to tie the game.
In the third inning, a two-run homer by Matt Rizzotti to left field off Arbiso gave the R-Phils a 3-1 lead. Phillies RHP Drew Naylor then retired ten straight batters until Marcos Vechionacci and Justin Snyder both reached base on singles in the fifth. Naylor then served up a three-run homer to Christian out to left field to give Trenton a 4-3 lead after five innings.
Arbiso left after allowing three runs on eight hits and three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of work. Wilkin de la Rosa and Josh Schmidt pitched the game into the ninth inning setting up a save opportunity for RHP Kevin Whelan. Reading put runners on the corners against Whelan and with one out, the righty leaped and grabbed a bouncing ball heading towards second base. Whelan came down with the ball and threw out Rich Thompson trying to score from third. He then struck out Matt Rizzotti to end the game and earn the save.
Trenton and Reading conclude their four game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP D.J. Mitchell takes the mound for Trenton, while Reading will counter with RHP Vance Worley. For tickets, call 609-394-330, or online at trentonthunder.com.
