Baysox Avoid Sweep with Big Inning

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox offense exploded with six runs in the seventh inning Thursday to come-from-behind in a 6-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs. The win helped the Baysox avoid a three-game home sweep at the hands of Portland.

Runs were hard to come by for the Baysox early in the game as Portland starter Justin Haley shut down the offense for the first six innings. However, Bowie's bats came alive after getting to the bullpen in the seventh inning as the Baysox batted around in the inning and scored all of their runs.

The Sea Dogs struck first in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox starter Nick Additon, who was making his Baysox debut. Mike Miller hit a lead off single to center field and Sean Coyle then reached on a fielding error by third baseman Buck Britton. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Michael Almanzar then brought Miller home with a single to left field. Dave Chester followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Coyle and gave Portland a 2-0 lead.

The Baysox came back to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Pete Ruiz. David Freitas hit a lead off single to left field and Mike Yastrzemski followed with a double to right field before a Niuman Romero RBI single to right field got the scoring started. Buck Britton brought two more runners home with a double to center field and K.D. Kang drew a walk before reliever Jeremy Kehrt replaced Ruiz on the mound. Sharlon Schoop followed with a single to left field that plated Britton and the final two runs on the inning scored on a Chris Marrero two-RBI single to left field to give the Baysox a 6-2 lead.

Ryan Dent added a run for the Sea Dogs in the top of the ninth inning with a two-out home run off the scoreboard in left-center field against Baysox reliever Steven Hensley.

Additon pitched six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out four in the no decision. Reliever Matt Bischoff pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three in the win. Hensley pitched the ninth inning and allowed one run on one hit while striking out one.

Ruiz took the loss for Portland, pitching to the first five batters in the seventh inning but not recording an out while allowing five runs on four hits and one walk.

LHP Anthony Vasquez takes the mound for the Baysox Friday as the team opens a three-game road series against the Trenton Thunder. The Baysox begin a six-game roadtrip with stops in Trenton and New Britain Friday, Aug. 8 and return home for a six-game homestand Friday, Aug. 15.
